On Sunday, the 391st anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's birth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to him.

"On the anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's birth, I salute him. We are inspired by his bravery and emphasis on good administration "PM Modi tweeted.

At Shivneri Fort in Pune, Shivaji Maharaj was born on February 19, 1630. The festival of Jayanti honours the birthdate of the illustrious Maratha emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The main goal of the day is to honour the great warrior's role in the Maratha Empire's restoration and to acknowledge his broad legacy.

After a bloody battle with the Mughals in 1670, he established the Maratha Empire in western India in 1674.

Incidentally, the Shiv Jayanti celebration was started in 1870 by Jyotirao Govindrao Phule, also known as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, and has since been observed with great fervour.
